Mobile World Congress – MWC 2017 – A Curtain Raiser

When it comes to mobile phone technology, the most important event of the year is undoubtedly the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. The world’s biggest mobile tech show is back in action this year from the Feb 27th to Mar 2nd.

This is the flagship event where the worlds biggest mobile phone companies showcase their upcoming tech and show off their latest flagships for the year.

This seminal show is organized by the GSMA, which represents the interests of mobile operators worldwide, uniting nearly 800 operators with almost 300 companies in the broader mobile ecosystem, including handset and device makers, software companies, equipment providers and internet companies, as well as organisations in adjacent industry sectors. The GSMA also produces industry-leading events such as Mobile World Congress, Mobile World Congress Shanghai, Mobile World Congress Americas and the Mobile 360 Series conferences.

So, what’s hot this year at MWC? Here’s what is expected

  • The All Metal LG G6 is expected to make its debut here. After last years lack lustre show with the LG G5, LG has stuffed in everything except the kitchen sink on this phone. Expect a radical departure in design and features.
  • Nokia Resurrection – Yes! the day all of us diehard Nokia fans were waiting for. HMD, the new owners of Nokia are expected to showcase their flagship offering and we’re sure millions are waiting eagerly to see their favorite smartphone rise from the ashes.
  • Huawei’s P10 series – What will Huawei bring to the game now? Last year they made dual cameras mainstream with the incredible P9 and the Leica branded dual camera setup. Can’t wait to see this rising star’s plans this year.
  • The Advent of 5G . We are expecting a lot of 5G related announcements this MWC, including one of our local player Etisalat.

Snap Spectacles for Snapchat

Snap Spectacles for Snapchat

Snapchat has grown expontentially in the past few years, becoming the social media platform of choice for the younger generation. It’s success has been acknowledged by rivals, with Instagram and Facebook copying popular Snapchat features and incorporating them into their own offerings.

And while competitors were focused on the features, Snap ( the company behind Snapchat) has pivoted forward with the launch of their Spectacles. The Snap Spectacles are a eyeglass wearable that can capture upto 10 secs of video and post on Snapchat. This provides a unique POV perspective to your Snaps.

While we’ve been seeing many companies trying to get into the eyewear wearables game, starting from Sony way back in 1996 to Google’s very public failure with the Google Glass, Snap seems to have nailed the looks and hardware on their spectacles. The Snap Spectacles look like normal glasses with just 2 small dark circles in the corner that look like a style element.

But how good are these Spectacles?

LG G6 – leaks and rumors

LG G6 – leaks and rumors

2016. For many people, it was the best year.
Unlike celebrity fanboys, LG was an entity that worked really hard and brought out some stellar phones in 2016, only to see lacklustre reception from the markets.  The G5 was definitely a very refined version of what a modular phone could be. Unfortunately, like the ill-fated Project Ara from Google, this too didnt really click with audiences.

That brings us to 2017. And the upcoming LG G6. LG seems to have learnt its lessons from the school of hard knocks. The leaks seem very enticing for smartphone fans like us. LG is promising a large 5.7 inch screen. They claim to be bringing out a true one handed operation. This, if true, will really help us big phone users ( Yours truly included!).  The body seems to be an all metal. Breaking away from their tradition of having removable batteries, LG seems to have included a non removable battery. This is mostly done to aid with making the phone waterproof.

It is not yet clear if LG has secured the coveted Snapdragon 835 chips or releasing with the Snadragon 821.  This flagship also has the distinction of being the first non-Google phone to release with the Google Assistant.  When it coming to packing their flagships with features, LG has always followed the philosophy of throwing everything but the kitchen sink. And it looks like they will continue to thrill enthusiasts with this phone too.
